Quick Tips for Weight Loss

 Hey guys!

Last Fall, I gained some weight during an intense online Biology class.  When I say intense, I mean INTENSE!!  I had no time to exercise, I ate quick & easy (aka unhealthy) meals, and I barely slept.  For 8 weeks! I'm not even sure how I survived.  When I finally recovered my wits after class ended, I tried to lose the weight.  I struggled.  And I struggled.  And I struggled.  I was making things too complicated.  I made a few changes and the weight started falling off.  What to know what I did??

Eat simply - don't over-complicate your meals.  Stick to clean, natural, whole foods.  Avoid artificial ingredients, chemicals, and additives.  IF you have to eat some processed, prepackaged food (and now-a-days who can avoid it 100% of the time?) make sure it has as few ingredients as possible.  If you don't know what an ingredient is, don't eat it!  We like to plan meals around several staple items and fresh produce.  Beans, grains, quinoa, amaranth, romaine, kale, apples, and bananas (with some random fruits and veggies thrown in for variety).  Lunch and dinner are often one of several salads I try to eat weekly.

Walk 250-500 steps an hour - that's 3,000 to 6,000 steps over 12 hours.  It's only a few minutes of walking each hour.  Adding these steps is especially important if you sit at a desk all day.  Walk at your desk.  Walk while you sit.  Do whatever it takes to move your body.  I've read it takes 20-30 steps to burn a single calorie.  That's an extra 150 to 300 calories extra you are burning.  Not only are you burning extra calories, you are also keeping your metabolism working all day.

Eat a little less than a serving size - whatever a serving size is for what you are eating, eat a few bites less.  If it's 15 almonds, eat 13.  1 cup of grapes, eat 9/10 of a cup.  When you eat slightly less, your body is still satisfied, but you've saved some calories.  You have to have a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound.  Eating a little less can add up those deficit calories quickly.  If you are counting calories, enter the full serving amount of calories to "trick" yourself into eating less.

Burn 500-1000 calories more than you consume - Knowing how many calories to eat is confusing.  Overly limiting your calories is frustrating.  Going over your calorie goal causes guilt.  I mentioned earlier it takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound.  That's a deficit of 500 calories a day for a 1 pound weight loss a week, or 1000 calories for 2 pounds.  Instead of stressing about how many calories to eat a day, aim to burn an extra 1000 calories.  Make sure to take into account your basal metabolic rate (how many calories your body burns just to survive doing nothing) and exercise.  And don't forget to make those calories come from healthy and clean foods!!!

Once a week push yourself past your limits - Our bodies are masters at adapting.  They become "used to" our workouts and don't have to work as hard.  Don't believe me?  Look into the Principle of Overload and the Principle of Diminishing Returns.  Basically, we need to do more than our muscles can handle and after time, our benefits lessen.  Not cool, right?   So at least once a week, we need to push ourselves past what we think we can handle.  Now, I don't mean doing so much you hurt yourself.  Nor do I mean make it so hard you get frustrated and give up.  But, do a little bit more.  You normally walk for 30 minutes - do 35 instead.  You normally lift 50 pounds - try 55.  You run at 5.0 mph - try 5.2.  Or maybe you only like to do one type of workout.  You like Pilates - try Zumba.  You strictly weight lift - try crossfit.  Whatever it is, just push your body out of it's comfort zone!

If you give my tips a try, I'd love to hear about your results.  And as always, you have any questions or need more ideas, send me a message.  I'd love to hear from you.  Now, don't forget....

Disappointments & How to Dream Big

website

Some people call me impatient and pessimistic.  I call myself a realistic big dreamer.  Oxymoron?  Maybe.  But, I've dealt with a lot of disappointment in my life...most of it my own fault.  Unfortunately, I am own of those people who unconsciously expects results right away.  I'll eat right and workout for a day and be a bit disappointed when the scale doesn't move a bit the next day.  Luckily, I recently had a breakthrough in my mindset.  Do you also expect results to soon?

Think about this...when you cut your finger, does it heal immediately because you put Neosporin on it once?  When you have a cold, are you cured after taking DayQuil once?  No!! your body needs time and continual care to heal.

website
The same applies to weight loss.  It takes more than a day, week, or a month to heal your body and lose weight/gain muscle/increase stamina.  Remember the saying....Rome wasn't built in a day?  Same thing applies to your body.  When your expectations are realistic, you decrease your mental strain and allow your body to do its thing.

BUT, at the same time....you do still need to dream big.  I know, I know!  Basically, the opposite of what I just said.  However, without goals and dreams we never change.  We get stuck.  Stagnant.  So keep dreaming.  Hell, dream BIG! But, keep your timeline expectations realistic.  Don't expect to make 1 million dollars by tomorrow, start a profitable business in day, or lose 20 pounds in a week.  Work hard toward your goal everyday.  And you will see the results you want!

Bootylicious : my favorite butt exercises

It's been awhile since I've posted, and I apologize for that, but trust me when I say I have some pretty awesome posts in the works.  While I'm busy researching and working on those, I wanted to still touch base.  According to a recent poll (ok I asked on facebook, lol), a post on exercise was wanted by the masses (ok, one friend, haha, but whatever).  So, I decided to share my favorite exercises for my favorite body part to work out....the butt!  I like big butts and I cannot lie...oh, oops.

I've mentioned in a previous post or two how I fell in love with Blogilates and Pop Pilates.  But, I never explained how that love affair started.  I was walking the dogs a lot and starting to really get into fitness.  I downloaded an app called Pretty Fit.  It is a collection of different workout video clips.  I stumbled across a video by Cassey Ho of Blogilates called Bubble Butt (Clenching My Booty)Workout.  It said it was Pop Pilates for Beginners.  I've tried Pilates in the past and liked it.  And, I'm definitely a beginner.  So, I gave it a shot.  OH EM GEE!!  It was hard but in a good way!  I could feel it working...it hurt so good!  But, it wasn't so hard, that you want to give up or feel like you can't finish.  And something about Cassey made it easy to keep going.  Now, I am not a happy, bubbly person; nor do I usually like happy, bubbly people.  In fact, I usually curse at them through the television (laptop, phone, etc).  But, she doesn't make me do that.  So, I kinda fell in love with the workouts, and possibly even her (girl crush much!).  Check out the video that started it all....

I've watched MANY of her glute targeted videos, because like I said, it is my favorite muscle group to work out. I've compiled some of my favorite moves.  Make sure your core is tight and you are squeezing those glutes as much as you can.  Fitness gurus always say to imagine a penny in between your cheeks....now don't let it drop!

The Grasshopper

Lie down on your stomach.  Arms under your head with your knees bent.  Heels are together, toes pointing out.  Now squeeze your butt and lift. Repeat.  On last repetition, hold.

The Arabesque Lift with Pulse

Hold a chair, couch, or counter. Lean forward.  While planting right leg, lift left leg up as high as comfortable. Slowly lower to lightly touch toe to ground. Repeat.  On last repetition, pulse. Switch sides.

The Heel Raise with Pulse

On all fours, straighten one leg. Lift as high as comfortable.  Slowly lower to lightly touch toes to ground.  Repeat.  On last repetition, pulse.  Switch sides.  Can also be done as a donkey kick.  Same movement, only the working leg is bent at knee, foot flat.

The Bridge with Pulse

Lie on back with knees bent.  Raise and slowly lower pelvis.  Repeat.  On last repetition, pulse when lifted. I like to do this at the end, it gives me a little rest.  But, if you'd like to make it harder, do this move with one leg lifted (make sure to do both sides).

One-Legged Deadlift

Standing on one leg, lean forward.  Lift non-standing leg behind, and lower opposite arm (or both arms if using weights) towards the floor.  Raise back to starting.  Repeat.  Switch sides.

Treadmill at Incline

If you are looking for some butt working cardio, try a treadmill at an incline.  I like to work my way up, then walk at a decent pace (3 to 3.5 mph) at a 10% incline for as long as I can stand.  My booty is burning after that!

You can also do squats, plie squats, lunges, but those get boring after awhile.  And don't forget to stretch after!  My favorite stretches.....

Pretzel Pose
(also known as the figure four pose lying down)

Lying on back, bend knees.  Put right ankle on left knee.  Slowly life left leg to 90 degrees.  Thread right arm between legs.  Both arms grasp left thigh and lightly pull towards you, while pushing right knee out.  For added stretch, straighten left leg.  Hold, then switch sides.

Figure Four Pose
(standing)

Standing on left leg, cross right ankle over knee.  Slowly squat while maintaining balance. Keep back straight.  Arms can be out for balance, straight up to the sky, or in prayer pose (my favorite. Helps center and focus me).  Hold, then switch sides.

Pigeon Pose

Go into a runner's lunge position.  Lower front leg so the outside of the calf is on the floor.  Back leg out behind you, as straight as possible.  Lean and stretch forward as far as comfortable.  Hold, then switch sides.

I'm including links to all the pictures I used, so you can peruse and find some other exercises you may like.  If there is another area you'd like me to share my favorites on, drop me a line.  Remember, I am not a fitness expert, I have not studied fitness, and talk to your doctor before you start any exercise routine.  These are just a few of my favorite exercises that really make my booty burn.

Have fun toning and growing that booty!

Freed{om}

Man, this has been an amazing week! I have been focusing on releasement.  Releasing of anger, negativity, bad energy, and weight!  I feel like a different, lighter person already.  Here's what I did...

I started meditating.  No, this is not hippie granola stuff.  It is the art of reflecting, contemplating, relaxing, balancing and manifesting your desires.  Meditation simultaneously focuses, brings peace and energizes.  It opens up the mind and soul for the answers you are looking for, even some you didn't know you were looking for.  And something we all need....stress reduction!  Listening to mediations at work, keeps me from freaking the heck out.

I actually combined meditation with chakra healing and balancing.  Each of the 7 chakras are a point of energy that represents different characteristics, senses, and parts of the bodies.  Through research and reading, I've learned which chakras are deficient (blocked or unbalanced) in myself.  For those curious, I am unbalanced in my root, solar plexus, and crown. Basically, I feel like I lack security, confidence, and stability.  I have a slow metabolism and anxiety.  Hmmmm.... So, my meditations have been focusing on these chakras.  I am in love with Ascension Boot Camp's root chakra meditation, and anything by Deepak Chopra.

I have also been using mantras throughout my day.  I go on a "Soul Stroll" by Erin Stutland (see previous posts) every other day, as well as use the "I am Enough" Meditation from the same program.  They both have some really amazing, powerful, uplifting mantras.  If you are interested, you can sign up for a free "Soul Stroll" mini track here.  I read the mantras daily, pick out one or two that resonate with me for the day, and manifest greatness.  Powerful stuff!!

I also went to yoga this week...first time in a few weeks.  I've been so focused on the walking and strength training, I put aside my yoga.  BIG MISTAKE!  I not only feel it in my flexibility, but in my mind as well.  It alleviates stress, focuses the mind, makes worries seem less important, opens you up for the greatness the universe offers, and provides an overall sense of well being and security.  I love yoga because it forces me to relax and really take care of myself, and just me, even if it's just for an hour.  Breathe in positive energy, breathe out the negative.

Monday began the orientation of the new amazing program I'm a part of....Wildly Alive Weight Loss by Nichole Kellerman Wurth (also see previous posts).  Guys, this is not just your average weight loss, exercise, diet plan.  Nichole makes you dig deep into the whys and hows of how you got to where you are now (unhealthy and unhappy).  She helps you break those patterns of holding onto negativity and covering emotions with food.  This week has included a lot of forgiveness work (myself and others) and letting go of negative emotions.  I've cried, started to get angry, but more importantly, I started to feel free.  I've just started the program and already my heart feels lighter.  Incredibly wonderful!!

All of these things on their own are AMAZING, but I wanted to kick it up a notch.  Every time I did one of these activities or assignments, I used Young Living's Release and Humility essential oils.  Release does exactly what it says....helped me  release anger and negative emotions.  Humility opened me up to forgiveness.  These oils are their own are incredibly powerful, but combined with tough emotion and mental work...WOW.  I honestly don't believe I could have gotten as far in this process or had it work so deeply, so quickly without these oils.  Want to know more about these amazing oils....send me a message, we can chat.

With the release of so many negative emotions, thoughts, and actions, guess what else other negativity was released......my weight!!!  The pounds have just been melting off of me.  Don't get me wrong, I'm working my tail off (literally).  I'm walking, watching what I eat, eating more fruits and veggies than I ever imagined, and drinking so much water I feel like I may drown.  But, I've been doing that for awhile.  I owe it all to release.  I have freed my mind and the result was a freed waist line. Now if you'll excuse me, I have more meditating to do.....OOOOOOMMMMMMM!

Namaste!

A "Wildly Alive" Valentine's Day

I hope you are all having an amazing Valentine's Day with your significant other, children, furbabies, friends, yourself, or who ever you may love.  Valentine's Day usually bums me out.  I haven't celebrated with anyone but myself in a few years (and I wasn't a very good date to myself).  And the last time I did celebrate it was a disaster (me and Red Lobster does not equal a good time).  Even though I am in a very wonderfully amazing relationship, we do not celebrate (which is ok, I get the reason behind it).  But, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself this morning.  That is, until I saw this Facebook post... Feel The Love.

WOW!  This made me rethink something I've been trying to work out.  Like I mentioned in my last post, I recently finished the 21 day Get Moving Challenge through Wildly Alive Weight Loss by Nichole Kellerman Wurth.  I wanted to continue with her 12 week program, but there were some concerns (money, time, personal things).  I wanted it so badly, but I was letting these things stop me.

All in one day, I received a group email from Nichole talking about the issues with relationships and finances, I get a personalized call from Nichole (which I won through the challenge) where we discussed the main issue holding me back, AND I see her post about self-love.  It CLICKED!  I needed to love myself enough to do this, enough to break through those barriers.  I needed to put myself first, which is so hard for me to do.  I'm a natural giver and helper.  That's what I was put on Earth to do.  But, if I'm not happy and content with myself and my life, how can I be of any use to anyone else.  In that moment, I knew I had to do it no matter what.

And...well...I did it!  My Wildly Alive journey officially begins February 16th.  The moment I finished signing up, it was like a weight had been lifted off my heart.  The universe was telling me I needed this and I listened.  It is such an AMAZING feeling.  I am taking charge of my life and my destiny.  I am not content to sit here and accept unhappiness.  I am strong, I am powerful, I am Wildly Alive!

Because I chose to love myself, I have now had a wonderful Valentine's Day, even without celebrating!  Love yourself always!!  Until next time.....

Dietbets: motivation or hell?

Starting Monday, February 2nd, I am a player of the Blogilates DietBet.  For those of you who have never heard of DietBet, it is a website where a group of people bet a designated amount of money (usually $10-30) to lose 4% of their body weight in 4 weeks.  The players send in photo proof of their weight and check in through out the game.  Those who lose the weight in time split the pot of money.  Seems simple right?  Wrong!!!

First of all, you have to face your scale....YIKES!!!  I don't remember gaining those 2 pounds....*sigh*.....and you want me to take a picture of my feet on the scale showing my weight, a full body picture of me standing on the scale in workout clothes and send them to someone......*large sigh*.  Fine, I'll go ahead and ruin my day and possibly die of embarrassment.  Luckily, no one else in the game can see my weight unless I choose to let them.

Second, the next couple weeks are interesting.  4% of your body weight doesn't sound a lot to lose, and it really isn't.  If you are 120 lbs., that is only 4.8 lbs. 150 lbs. is 6 lbs.  HOWEVER, when you are smaller in size, like the 120 or 150, losing weight gets harder.  It doesn't fall off as easily as when someone is larger.  But, whatever, it is doable.

Lastly, you are at week 3, you've lost 3.9 lbs.  That's 81% of your goal.  And you hit a plateau.  You have 1 week left, 7 days, 168 hours.  If you are like me, you hate to lose.  ESPECIALLY, when it comes to money.  You start freaking out.  And we all know how bad stress is to weight loss.  Every calorie consumed and every calorie expended is all you can think about.  You become obsessed and worried.

Now you tell me....is this a great motivational tool?  Or one of the seven rings of hell?  I guess it depends on how easily you lose weight and what percentage you have lost by week 3.  All I know is I'm addicted.  I've lost a few bets and won a few bets, but in the end it is all about the journey.  I am on a journey to health and fitness.  Wish me luck!!!
