Quick Tips for Weight Loss

 Hey guys!

Last Fall, I gained some weight during an intense online Biology class.  When I say intense, I mean INTENSE!!  I had no time to exercise, I ate quick & easy (aka unhealthy) meals, and I barely slept.  For 8 weeks! I'm not even sure how I survived.  When I finally recovered my wits after class ended, I tried to lose the weight.  I struggled.  And I struggled.  And I struggled.  I was making things too complicated.  I made a few changes and the weight started falling off.  What to know what I did??

Eat simply - don't over-complicate your meals.  Stick to clean, natural, whole foods.  Avoid artificial ingredients, chemicals, and additives.  IF you have to eat some processed, prepackaged food (and now-a-days who can avoid it 100% of the time?) make sure it has as few ingredients as possible.  If you don't know what an ingredient is, don't eat it!  We like to plan meals around several staple items and fresh produce.  Beans, grains, quinoa, amaranth, romaine, kale, apples, and bananas (with some random fruits and veggies thrown in for variety).  Lunch and dinner are often one of several salads I try to eat weekly.

Walk 250-500 steps an hour - that's 3,000 to 6,000 steps over 12 hours.  It's only a few minutes of walking each hour.  Adding these steps is especially important if you sit at a desk all day.  Walk at your desk.  Walk while you sit.  Do whatever it takes to move your body.  I've read it takes 20-30 steps to burn a single calorie.  That's an extra 150 to 300 calories extra you are burning.  Not only are you burning extra calories, you are also keeping your metabolism working all day.

Eat a little less than a serving size - whatever a serving size is for what you are eating, eat a few bites less.  If it's 15 almonds, eat 13.  1 cup of grapes, eat 9/10 of a cup.  When you eat slightly less, your body is still satisfied, but you've saved some calories.  You have to have a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound.  Eating a little less can add up those deficit calories quickly.  If you are counting calories, enter the full serving amount of calories to "trick" yourself into eating less.

Burn 500-1000 calories more than you consume - Knowing how many calories to eat is confusing.  Overly limiting your calories is frustrating.  Going over your calorie goal causes guilt.  I mentioned earlier it takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound.  That's a deficit of 500 calories a day for a 1 pound weight loss a week, or 1000 calories for 2 pounds.  Instead of stressing about how many calories to eat a day, aim to burn an extra 1000 calories.  Make sure to take into account your basal metabolic rate (how many calories your body burns just to survive doing nothing) and exercise.  And don't forget to make those calories come from healthy and clean foods!!!

Once a week push yourself past your limits - Our bodies are masters at adapting.  They become "used to" our workouts and don't have to work as hard.  Don't believe me?  Look into the Principle of Overload and the Principle of Diminishing Returns.  Basically, we need to do more than our muscles can handle and after time, our benefits lessen.  Not cool, right?   So at least once a week, we need to push ourselves past what we think we can handle.  Now, I don't mean doing so much you hurt yourself.  Nor do I mean make it so hard you get frustrated and give up.  But, do a little bit more.  You normally walk for 30 minutes - do 35 instead.  You normally lift 50 pounds - try 55.  You run at 5.0 mph - try 5.2.  Or maybe you only like to do one type of workout.  You like Pilates - try Zumba.  You strictly weight lift - try crossfit.  Whatever it is, just push your body out of it's comfort zone!

If you give my tips a try, I'd love to hear about your results.  And as always, you have any questions or need more ideas, send me a message.  I'd love to hear from you.  Now, don't forget....

The Magic of Walking

I recently took up walking again.  Me and the pups go for 2-3 miles, 30-60 min, of walking around the neighborhood.  We walk as fast as we can (when Jack isn't stopping to mark every tree and bush in sight) and have gotten up to an average of 3.15 mph.  Not too shabby!  I started walking for the pups' health and my weight loss, but we get so much more out of it.

The health benefits are incredible!  You can lose weight, gain muscle and tone existing muscle.  Not just the legs and butt....but arms, shoulders, back, and core, too!  It improves cardiovascular and lung function.  It can lower your risk for diabetes, asthma, some cancers, dementia, and osteoporosis.  It can improve your sex life (who doesn't want that?!?!).  It gives you more energy during the day, while helping you sleep better at night.  And it relieves stress, anxiety, and depression through endorphins and increased serotonin levels.  WOW!

What I love most about walking, besides the weight loss, is the variety you can get from your walk.  Feeling excited or need to get pumped up? Put on your favorite fast paced music and go!  Need to reconnect with nature? Go on a slow stroll and look at your surroundings.  Need to get out of your head?  Walk at a decent pace with some meditation tracks.  Pissed off, sad, or depressed? It pulls you out of your funk.  Happy, excited, joyful? It magnifies your feelings tenfold.

When I first started walking, I had trouble going.  So, I downloaded audiobooks to my phone.  When I really got to a book, I had a hard time stopping.  I wanted to keep walking until I finished the book.  I still listen to books often (right now I'm listening to George R. R. Martin's Dreamsongs Volume 2).  I forget that I'm exercising, forget to think about my troubles, and slip into happiness.  Plus, I love to multi-task, haha.

A few months ago, I discovered a fitness/weight loss challenge called Say It, Sweat It, Get It by Erin Stutland on Facebook.  One of the perks was a "Soul Stroll" mp3 track.  It has upbeat music and mantras.  It was AMAZING!  It got me moving!  I actually got up early before work (6am) to do it.  WHAT?!?!  Anyone who knows me, knows I don't get up earlier than absolutely necessary.  I loved it so much, I bought the full "Soul Stroll Volume 1" from her website (and hope to get her Shrink Session program soon).  Go check it out.... http://shrinksessionworkout.com/soul-stroll-1/

I also just finished a 21 day Get Moving Challenge for her Wildly Alive Weight Loss by Nichole Kellerman Wurth.  Some of the days, the challenge was to walk 10-20 minutes.  It felt so wonderful, I always walked for longer.  Her program also incorporates workout videos (that burn so good), mantras, and mental exercises to shift your mindset into a more positive, self-love thinking.  I can not wait to try her full program!  Go check her out as well.... http://wildlyaliveweightloss.com/

Both of these ladies (and their programs) are amazing!  They are showing me how to love myself and get what I want out of life.  It is breathtaking the changes I've made.  Not only am I getting movement back into my life with their programs, I am rethinking what I want to do with my life.  But, that's for another day.  Until then....go get moving!

Who am I?

Like so many others, my entire like I have searched to find the "real me".  I've been through so many different stages....daddy's girl, bratty pre-teen, horrible teenager, wannabe thug, party girl young adult, to overly-responsible-no-fun adult.  I've been a daughter, friend, girlfriend, wife, and step-mom.  But, never have I truly felt like me.....just ME!  I've always had a role to play; a mold to fit into.

After my separation and divorce, I didn't know what to do.  I no longer had to take care of other people or put them first.  It was just me and my furbabies (I'll introduce them in another post).  I had so much free time.  It was just work, then me time.  I didn't even know what I liked to do anymore.  For so many years, I planned family outings.  Or couples outings.  Or I had to catch up on things around the house.  I now live in a small apartment (vs a 4 bed, 2 bath house with yard), so it takes less time to clean.  I no longer have the family or circle of friends that came with married life.

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MYSELF???

At first, I unpacked and organized.  And then reorganized.  And reorganized again.  I scoured Pinterest for ideas on the best way to organize to streamline my life.  I felt so out of control in my life, that I needed my little space to be completely under control.  While looking for ways to organize, I started finding ideas of decorating and re-purposing.  Let me tell you, I enjoy the heck out of re-purposing.  Breathing new life into something old, broken, or no longer useful (metaphor for my life maybe?).  Follow me on Pinterest to see what's caught my interest at this moment.

Then, fitness and health happened.  For those of you who have known me for a while, you can attest to the fact that I did not like exercise or movement (unless I was dancing).  I was an unfit, unhealthy, junk-food-atarian.  I didn't (and still don't) like to eat a lot of meat.  I didn't like fruit or vegetables.  Unless it was carbs, dairy, or fat, I wouldn't eat it.  But, the move to the apartment didn't just affect me.  I have two small dogs and a cat.  They were used to having a larger house, backyard, and almost daily dog park trips.  While trying to adjust, we had a hard time with separation anxiety.  They would bark constantly when I left for work or errands.  Part of it wasn't their fault....there were some younger kids with a serious lack of parenting banging on my window trying to make the dogs bark at them (not maliciously, but still harmful to my babies).

We started going on evening walks: to wear them out, give me a way out of the house, help us re-bond, and to help Jack's chubbiness.  It started as 30 min, 1.5 miles.  Then grew to 60 min, 3 miles.  To adding short bursts of running, making better times, burning more calories.  Jack and Jill were so happy, and I was getting that endorphin high.  Plus, I started losing weight.  YES!!!!

And then I found Blogilates......Pop Pilates, what a wonderfully, powerful burn.  This site changed my life!  It introduced me to quick, fun workouts that work!!  I also started learning how to eat cleanly in a cheap and easy way.  I'm telling you, this site is a game changer.  If you haven't heard of it, check it out here: http://www.blogilates.com/
 (Cassey Ho, Blogilates)

Following Cassey's calenders, walking the dogs, and eating so much better increased the weight loss, but helped me find another passion.  HEALTH!  I'm obsessed with finding new ways of moving my body, better ways of eating, and emotional/spiritual balance.  Over the last few years, I've tried pilates, yoga, archery, hiking, walking, weight-lifting, wii fit and other games, clean eating, essential oils; all of which I love!

With all of these new activities, I'm getting closer to the true me.  I'll continue to share my past experiences, as well as keep you up to date on my current and future journeys.  If I can inspire even one person to not give up or to try something new, then the craziness I call life will be worth it!

Namaste!
